Conservation Commission approves Phragmites management at conservation area

Conservation Commission · Meeting of July 1, 2026

SOUTH HADLEY — Conservation Commission unanimously approves vegetation management plan for Rangeview Meadow Conservation Area. The Commission voted 5-0 to issue a Negative Determination of Applicability for mowing Phragmites australis across two Bordering Vegetated Wetland areas totaling 10,300 square feet at 315 Amherst Road. Conservation Administrator Rebekah Cornell detailed the project, which targets dense invasive monocultures that have reduced native plant diversity and wildlife habitat.

The Commission imposed conditions requiring mowing to occur after July 15 or potentially August 15 to protect nesting birds, with annual maintenance during dry seasons, plus requirements for the Department of Public Works to minimize mechanical impact and inspect for nests before work begins.
